PSM hounds Selangor exco on why traders not relocated before demolition

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) today continued to hound the Selangor government for failing to relocate a group of traders in Kampung Manickam, Bangi Lama, before demolishing their premises.

In a statement today, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan said the explanation, given by the state exco in charge of local government Ng Sze Han, did not address this.

Ng's claim that the demolition was above board, Arutchelvan said, also contradicted statements made by Sungai Ramal assemblyperson Mazwan Johor and Sungai Pelek assemblyperson Ronnie Liu.

Mazwan had gone on record stating that the traders should not be evicted until they are relocated.

As for Liu, he had claimed that the eviction violated two Selangor Pakatan Harapan policies - that relocation must precede eviction and that all local authorities must support small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Arutchelvan said that the issues raised by Mazwan were a key issue and that Ng should have addressed this matter.

The affected petty traders were evicted from the state-owned land despite having been paying "rental" to a hitherto unnamed landlord.

Many of those affected by the eviction saw their business premises demolished on Tuesday, despite their belongings being still inside their premises.

In a statement yesterday, Ng had refuted claims that the eviction was not conducted according to procedures and said the affected individuals have been informed of the demolition exercise since Aug 10 last year and were reminded three more times this year.

Ng claimed that the state government had provided a new location for the traders at the Bangi Lama market. However, he did not provide details.

Ng added that the state government had also extended state-run e-commerce options to the affected traders. - Mkini
