The BN supreme council meeting originally scheduled for tonight has been cancelled without explanation, according to a report.
The Astro Awani report said the cancellation was notified via WhatsApp message tonight from BN’s communications division.
However, it said no explanation or reason was offered for the cancellation.
When contacted earlier, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) deputy president Arthur Joseph Kurup told Malaysiakini he was still waiting for official notifications about the meeting.
MIC president SA Vigneswaran, meanwhile, had appeared to be in the dark when Malaysiakini asked if it would be joining the meeting.
“I don't know. I am feeling unwell. Let me talk to them first,” he said when informed at the time that MCA had indicated their attendance.
“Let me talk to MCA because there are some amendments (to the agenda). I want to talk to the (BN) chairperson first,” he told Malaysiakini.
MCA sources that initially told Malaysiakini that the party would attend the meeting have since reversed course, again without explanation.
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening, Astro Awani carried a separate report quoting an unnamed senior BN component party leader saying at the meeting might be called off because some component party leaders won’t be attending the meeting.
The report said this is done out of courtesy rather than having an insufficient quorum for the meeting.
“It (the cancellation) is still speculative. It is not a quorum issue. The quorum may be sufficient, but this is more as a courtesy amongst component parties.
“We want all parties to be together in the meeting,” the source was quoted as saying.
BN top leaders were originally expected to discuss the uncertainties in the coalition’s position in the next general election.
This followed Umno’s resolution to cease cooperating with Bersatu once the election is called, while MIC has decided otherwise. - Mkini
