Residents protest after Suke road closure cuts off their condo - report

The road closures following the fatal accident involving the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Expressway (Suke) have reportedly cut off the main access road for residents of a nearby condominium.

According to a Selangorkini report, Puncak Banyan condominium in Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras, is located a mere 100 metres from the site of the accident, and the road closures affected the only road in and out of the residential complex.

Condominium residents have held a protest today to oppose the closure, according to the report.

“The developer Prolintas’ move to close the only way in and out have caused residents to park their vehicles outside the condominium gates.

“We walk about 10 minutes through a temporary route prepared by the developer, and it gets worse if we have to carry heavy objects or small children,” said the residents’ spokesperson Patrick Cheah, reportedly on behalf of 388 residents.

In the March 22 accident, a construction crane on the elevated highway fell and killed three workers on site. A passing motorist was also seriously injured.

Following this, the Malaysian Highway Authority ordered several roads beneath the highway construction to be closed, in order to ensure public safety.

Construction has also been halted pending a safety audit.

The March 22 incident is only the latest in a string of serious accidents involving the Suke highway.

A woman escaped with light injuries after a concrete slab fell from the highway onto her car on Sept 19, 2020.

On March 3 this year, two died and three were injured when a bridge that was under construction collapsed. For this incident, however, a traffic accident is deemed to the cause and the contractor involved is found to have followed all traffic management requirements. - Mkini
