Steven Sim set to sue Prof Kamarul after comments over charitable acts

Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim has instructed his lawyers to take legal action against Universiti Utara Malaysia senior lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff after the latter questioned his motives in helping constituents who were Malay-Muslim.

“I was actually very affected by Kamarul’s slander and accusations against me but I remain patient because I respect the month of Ramadan as a sacred month for Muslims.

“Despite being asked by the public to take action, I did nothing.

“However, he has not stopped making baseless accusations.

“Therefore, for the benefit of the Malaysian community and as an example to all to maintain racial harmony in this country, I have instructed my lawyer to take legal action against Kamarul Zaman Yusoff and other parties involved,” said Sim in a Facebook post this afternoon.

Sim said the allegations not only tarnished his name as a MP, but also touched on racial and religious sentiments in society.

“Without remorse, he (Kamarul) also challenged me to take legal action against him,” said Sim.

Sim has recently been much lauded for proactive interventions to help those stricken by Covid-19.

He has found a new home for an evicted mother with 10 children, provided a Form 4 student with a laptop, provided a FoodPanda delivery rider with a bike and helped rehabilitate a homeless man on the streets of Malacca.

However, Kamarul objected to the publicity being given to Sim, particularly as a majority of those being helped were Malay-Muslim individuals.

He said it should be made clear that he has never once disputed all the help given by Sim to his constituents or to anyone else, but that he was uncomfortable over the attendant publicity.

“All I did was express my discomfort at seeing it (the aid) as deliberately being sensationalised for publicity through lengthy storytelling using verses meant to trigger emotions, linked to Ramadan and accompanied by detailed photographs that looked planned,” said Kamarul, who described Sim as a “Christian evangelist”.

Kamarul is currently in the process of suing several DAP leaders for defamation and today announced further legal action against a number of Pakatan Harapan members over the Sim issue. - Mkini
