Teen claims teacher made rape jokes in class, Maszlee calls for probe

A teenager has alleged that a male teacher made jokes about rape during a class on Friday, prompting widespread outrage on social media.

Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, 17, said the inappropriate remarks were made while students were discussing sexual harassment during a physical and health education class at her school in the Kuala Selangor district.

"It was going good you know, we were talking about sexual harassment, how to take care of yourself, your body rights.

"He was making a couple of jokes but it seemed normal at first, but slowly the jokes were getting weird and more lucah (lewd).

"Then we were talking about how there are laws protecting minors from sexual abuse and harassment, and then he said 'If you want to rape someone, don't rape those under 18, rape those above 18'," Ain said.

Ain revealed this in a video on social media platform Tiktok which she then reposted on Twitter.

According to the teen, the girls in class were shocked to hear the joke while the boys laughed.

She further alleged that the teacher claimed that boys who were raped did not report it because it felt sedap (good).

Ain also shared screenshots on Twitter, reportedly of her complaints about the joke to the school's counsellor.

While apologising on behalf of the teacher,  the counsellor also said teenage boys liked to make crude jokes but not to take it to heart.

When contacted, Ain told Malaysiakini that she planned to lodge a complaint about the lewd remarks at her school on Monday.

Police report

Her father, Saiful Nizam Abdul Wahab, meanwhile, said he planned to lodge a police report over the matter tonight.

"I will be lodging a police report regarding this tonight and next week I will go to school to meet with the school authorities," he said.

Saiful Nizam said he was very disappointed that a teacher would treat rape so lightly.

"Worse, it indirectly implants the idea that rape can be done, can be accepted as normal and be joked about when teaching," he told Malaysiakini.

He said the teacher should be more sensitive to such matters.

The father also expressed disappointment with the school counsellor for allegedly not dealing with the matter.

Malaysiakini is attempting to contact the school for further comment.

Meanwhile, Ain's tweet caught the attention of former education minister Maszlee Malik who called on the school's principal to investigate the matter.

"Rape is not a joke, and teacher should be emphasising safety, not otherwise," he said.

The incident comes amid outrage after the discovery of period spot checks at schools came to light.

According to various individuals who spoke to Malaysiakini, the practice includes forcing girls to show their used sanitary pads, perform vaginal swabs with either cotton buds, tissues and even fingers or having a teacher, warden, or school prefect pat them at the groin to feel if they are wearing a sanitary pad. - Mkini
