MELAKA: Some 20 primary and secondary schools in Melaka have been ordered to close due to Covid-19 cases, says state health and anti-drug committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman.

He said all three districts - Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin - are now Covid-19 red zone areas with an average of 40 cases being registered in a day.

“Apart from educational institutions, Melaka also saw a new surge of cases at places of worship.

The bed capacity at Melaka Hospital has also reached 60% from the 117 beds that had been set aside for Covid-19 patients, ” he said on Tuesday (May 4).

Rahmad said Melaka Hospital has the ability to increase the beds to 300 if the situation warrants.

On Monday (May 3), the Melaka Islamic Department (Maim) announced that SOPs will be tightened for the maintenance of mosques and suraus in the state.

Maim director Datuk Che Sukri Che Mat said changes to the SOPs will take effect today (May 4) following the rise of cases.

Meanwhile, Melaka recorded 52 positive cases on Tuesday, where 454 are still receiving treatment with 22 in ICU and three requiring ventilators. - Star
