KUALA LUMPUR: Umno must be led by a person who has the right qualities to be the next prime minister, says Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
"We want the party to be led by the best person for the job," he said when met on Tuesday (May 4).
The Federal Territories Minister also said although it was tradition for the party president to hold the premiership, this did not necessarily have to be the case.
"I do not deny this (tradition), but this is not set in stone. We must understand that the political landscape has changed a lot, so nothing is impossible," said the Ketereh MP.
He was commenting on a statement by Tan Sri Shahrir Samad, who said that it was not necessary for the prime minister to also be the party president.
Annuar added he upheld the party's stand to not cooperate with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP and Bersatu.
"This is the party's stand and as an Umno member, I have to abide by it," he said.
Annuar was met at Hilton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur after a breaking of fast event with media personnel.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah and ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Rosida Jaafar. - Star
