BUKIT MERTAJAM: Several houses in Machang Bubok here were inundated in flood waters following heavy rain this afternoon.

A number of tents belonging to Ramadan bazaar traders in Kepala Batas and Sungai Dua were also damaged following the rain and freak storm.

The flash floods affected villagers of Kampung Tok Musa, Taman Seri Janggus, Taman Impian, Bukit Teh and Taman Sejahtera who were forced to break fast in flood waters of between 0.2m and 1m.

Flood victim, Syukran Hashim, 52, said the incident happened very fast after it rained heavily for about an hour.

He said before he knew it, flood waters had already entered his house, and he only managed to salvage several electrical appliances in the kitchen.

"The flood waters entered through the kitchen. At that time, my wife was preparing food for the breaking of fast while my grandchildren and I were watching television in the living room.

"We did not expect that the heavy rain this time would result in flash floods as the house is located on high ground.

"However, the flood waters rose quickly," he said, adding that this was the first time he broke fast in flood waters.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafee Abd Samad said the flood water receded about 9pm.

Fortunately, there was no evacuation.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and will take the necessary action if it rains heavily tonight," he added. - NST
