IPOH: A woman and her teenage daughter had a close shave with death after floodwaters swept away their car in Kota Raja, Taman Meru 2C, here, today.

The 47-year-old and her 19-year-old daughter, who were travelling in a Toyota Vios, were passing the flooded road stretch when the incident happened about 6pm.

It is learnt they were heading to their home in Manjung from Kota Raja here.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said heavy rain today caused Sungai Meru to overflow its banks, the floodwaters in turn sweeping away the car.

In a state of panic, mother and daughter climbed out through the window and clung on from the outside.

Luckily, several residents of a nearby village saw what was happening.

The spokesman said the department received a distress call about 6pm and a team from the Meru fire station was immediately despatched to the scene.

"Upon arrival, the victims were holding on to their Toyota Vios car which was stuck in the currents. They were holding on to the car to avoid being swept away.

"We had to use two rescue ropes, which were anchored to a tree. Rescuers then reached the victims slowly by following the current's direction, using the ropes."

The spokesman said the victims were then provided with life jackets and subsequently hauled to the anchoring area.

"Both victims are safe and didn't sustain any injuries. Their vehicle wasn't washed away either as the current had started to subside gradually," he said, adding that the operation ended at 7.19pm. - NST
