I Had Already Testified In The SUHAKAM Inquiry That The Special Branch Is A Political Tool

Yes, this was in 1951, 70 years ago and six years before Merdeka. And 70 years ago the Special Branch was already a political weapon for Umno and the then Prime Minister-in-waiting, Tunku Abdul Rahman. So, what the fook is Hamid Bador and Kluster anti-Muhyiddin talking about? Mereka semua baru tahu ke? This is merely a weak attempt at attacking the government with a so-called ‘shocking revelation’ since the Pakatan Harapan people will believe anything, as long as it is negative to the government.

Suhakam to start public inquiry into ISA detainees soon

(Malaysiakini, 5 June 2002), The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) is completing its groundwork for a public inquiry into the conditions of those held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) at the Kamunting Detention Camp in Taiping, Perak.

Suhakam vice-chairperson Harun Hashim said the date for the inquiry, which is expected to be held this month, will be set at the commission’s monthly meeting next week.

This was my second detention under ISA

“We are finalising the details of the inquiry, including preparations for witnesses and detainees, to be discussed at our next meeting on Monday,” he said when met at Suhakam office in Kuala Lumpur today.

It is learnt from reliable sources that the inquiry is expected to be held in Taiping.

“The number of witnesses is still not determined and arrangements are being made with the authorities in Taiping and Kamunting. It will encompass a cross-section of ISA detainees held in Kamunting, including members of the Shia faith, the Al-Ma’unah martial arts cult and the six reformasi activists,” a source said.

*********************************************************************************

The public inquiry into the detentions under the Internal Security Act mentioned in the news item above was held in Taping on 18th June 2002 and I was one of those who testified at that inquiry. At first, I did not want to testify, but since the “Reformasi Six” boycotted the Inquiry, Suhakam requested that I testify in their place instead.

This was what Lim Kit Siang said on 3rd August 2002:

With the announcement by Suhakam today that it would be continuing with its public inquiry into Internal Security Act detentions on Monday, the six Internal Security Act (ISA) reformasi activists, namely Mohamad Ezam Mohamad Nor, Hishamuddin Rais, Chua Tian Chang, Saari Sungib, Badrulamin Bahron and Lokman Noor Adam, should end their boycott of the Harun Hashim Suhakam public inquiry and apply to have their public say on the Internal Security Act (ISA).

The six ISA reformasi activists had boycotted the Harun Hashim public Inquiry at the Taiping Prisons Club in June (18th) on two main grounds: the scope of the inquiry and limitation to their appearance by two representatives instead of by all the six.

Anyway, since the “Reformasi Six” boycotted the Inquiry and refused to testify, I did, instead, and I told Suhakan about what happened in the 60 days that we were under detention.

The Human Rights Watch report regarding the April 2001 ISA detentions

Most of those 60 days were spent trying to convince us that we were wrong about Anwar Ibrahim and that he was without a doubt guilty of sodomising Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s driver, Azizan Abu Bakar. In fact, the Special Branch had files on 12 cases of sodomy involving Anwar.

The Special Branch then showed us the files and the evidence to prove that Anwar is guilty of 12 cases of sodomy.

The Special Branch tried their best to convince us to abandon the Reformasi cause and support the government. On my third day of detention, they served a bankruptcy notice on me with 14 days to go to court to contest this bankruptcy notice.

But then I was under 60 days detention and was in solitary confinement. So how could I go to court within 14 days to contest this bankruptcy notice? And it was not even my debt. They alleged I had guaranteed someone else’s debt and that that person had not paid. Hence I was being made bankrupt for what someone else was owing.

The Special Branch told me all that can be easily settled if I just crossover and support the government. All they needed was me to publicly declare I was abandoning the Reformasi cause and was joining Umno.

Why not Hamid Bador reveal the reason why the ten of us were detained under ISA 20 years ago in 2001?

I was finally released on 6th June 2001, 59 days after my detention and one day short of the 60 days. Coincidentally, 6th June coincides with the Agong’s birthday and the Agong then was Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj, my father’s cousin.

Also, coincidentally, on that day (the Agong’s birthday), the IGP, Norian Mai, was given an ‘award’. So, the talk, then, was that the Agong ‘bought’ my release while the other six ISA detainees (the ‘Reformasi Six’) were sent to Kamunting for two years.

Anyway, the point is, 20 years ago back in 2001, the Special Branch was used to ‘turn us over’. The ISA detentions were meant to brainwash us into abandoning the Reformasi cause and support the government. And, in my 18th June 2002 testimony to Suhakam, I had revealed this, which is on record.

So what is former IGP Abdul Hamid Bador and the Kluster anti-Muhyiddin talking about? This is old news. The Special Branch has been doing this for years.

The Special Branch pressured Mustapha Hussain into not challenging Tunku Abdul Rahman for the Umno Presidency

The book “The Memoirs of Mustapha Hussain: Malay Nationalism Before UMNO” relates how the Special Branch was used to pressure Mustapha Hussain into not challenging Tunku Abdul Rahman for the Umno Presidency in 1951.

Yes, this was in 1951, 70 years ago and six years before Merdeka. And 70 years ago the Special Branch was already a political weapon for Umno and the then Prime Minister-in-waiting, Tunku Abdul Rahman.
