No weddings or akad nikah, only five at a gathering in Sarawak until May 17

KUCHING: Social events are not allowed in Sarawak from Friday (May 7) until May 17 under tighter standard operating procedures (SOP) to fight the Covid-19 surge in the state.

According to the updated guidelines, these include akad nikah, wedding and engagement ceremonies, doa selamat, tahlil, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties and reunions.

The SOP also stipulates that individuals are not allowed to gather in groups of more than five in public places during this period.

Sarawak is currently under a conditional movement control order until May 17.

On Thursday (May 6), the state disaster management committee announced that the SOP would be tightened to break the chain of infection, after assessing the current risk and rising trend of Covid-19 cases in the state.

Besides the stricter restrictions on social gatherings, the updated SOP also prohibits physical meetings, corporate events and tourism activities.

Dine-in customers at restaurants and eateries are limited to 50% of a place's capacity or a maximum of 100 persons with physical distancing of 1m.

However, dine-in is not allowed in Sibu, Selangau, Kanowit, Betong, Bintulu, Kapit and Sarikei. Eateries in these districts can only operate takeaway, drive-through or delivery services.

The full SOP is available on the state Local Government and Housing Ministry's website at mlgh.sarawak.gov.my. - Star
