See you in court, Mahathir tells ex-IGP Khalid

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has refused to back down from his statements which former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar claimed to be defamatory.

In a statement today, Mahathir said he has received Khalid’s letter of demand and instructed his lawyers to respond to it.

“I will see him in court,” he said.

This came after Khalid reportedly threatened an RM10 million defamation lawsuit against Mahathir if he fails to apologise within seven days for an article published in The Malaysian Insight on April 16.

The report quoted a Malaysiakini interview published that day where Mahathir said he had been in communication with then Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz regarding former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s financial activities.

The former premier said the group of four top civil servants were planning to take action against Najib, but the plan was foiled when the group was betrayed.

According to the Perikatan Nasional Backbencher’s Club’s official website, Khalid issued a letter of demand on April 22 through the law firm Gunaseharan & Linda.

The report said the letter demands that Mahathir give a written apology within seven days to be published on The Malaysian Insight, as well as his own social media channels.

“RM10 million is to be paid to our client as compensation for damages sustained by our client following the defamatory statement you made through the article on April 16,” the letter reportedly read. - Mkini
