Stop the use of Special Branch for political purposes, says DAP MP

Klang MP Charles Santiago says former IGP Abdul Hamid Bador had confirmed what had long been suspected, that the Special Branch was being used by politicians.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Charles Santiago has called on the prime minister and the Police Force Commission to put an end to the practice of using the Special Branch for political purposes.

“Otherwise, the erosion of confidence in the police force will prevail,” the Klang MP said in a short statement.

Santiago also said former inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador had confirmed what had long been suspected, that the Special Branch was being misused by politicians.

He was responding to Hamid’s claim that the home minister attempted to install a new Special Branch director to gain better control over the division.

Hamid said the plan had been to ensure that the Special Branch would be more agreeable to following directives from the home ministry.

He also said minister Hamzah Zainudin had forced the Special Branch to conduct several operations for its own political purposes.

Santiago went on to say that he found it ironic that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has remained mum over Hamzah’s involvement in using the police intelligence unit as his political tool.

Neither has Muhyiddin, a former home minister, said anything about the “cartel of dirty cops” alleged by Hamid.

“This is disturbing, to say the least. It’s time for Muhyiddin to step up and show some leadership,” said Santiago.

In January, Hamid claimed that the “cartel of dirty cops” would try and ensure that their collaborators get promoted so they can dominate their teams and the police hierarchy in the future, making it easier for them to do their “dirty work”.

Hamid said mid-level senior police officers were behind the cartel. - FMT
