JOHOR BARU: May 16 has been designated and celebrated as Teachers' Day since 1972, a day when the public focus falls on the value of teachers and their contributions to society.
This year, with the imposition of the Movement Control Order (MCO) from May 12 until June 7 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, gatherings and meetings are not allowed.
This also means Teachers' Day celebration in schools could not be held physically.
Howevers, several students said they would take to social media to express appreciation to their teachers.
Perhaps the highest compliment students paid to teachers was to call them the "the ever-burning candle."
Raveen Naikar, from SMK Skudai, said as he was unable to meet his teachers until next month, he would send messages to his teachers.
The Form Four student said he would send a WhatsApp message to his favourite teacher.
"I will send my greetings via social media to thank her for all she has done for me," he said.
"The importance of teachers in society can't be underestimated. They take on the responsibility of shaping young minds and
changing their lives for the better," he opined.
His classmate Shalin Aideena Amran, 16, said she would take to Twitter to express thanks to her teachers who have been caring, creative and committed.
"Since I'm not able to go to school, I will tweet my comments and show my deepest appreciation to them who have nurtured and guided us thus far," she said.
Shalin Aideena who considers her teachers as the most influential people in her lives after her parents said since this year's Teachers' Day is not going to be celebrated she may even want to call and thank them.
Oi En Yi, 17, from SMK I.J. Convent said: "Teaching is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and we ought to honour educators, not only this week but every week."
"Teachers are one of the biggest role models for students. They inspire them to push themselves to accomplish their goals.
"Besides, they guide students on everything, from academic interests to issues related to their personal lives," said En Yi, a Form Five student.
Her schoolmate Choo Yu Xuan said she would like to express her gratitude to her teachers via Facebook.
"After our parents, our teachers are the most influential people in our lives. They shape us for the future."
She noted that her teachers have been working extra hard during the MCO period.
"This challenging period of lockdown has served to further increase our appreciation and love for our teachers," she said.
Overall, she said teachers play a crucial role in the development of society for they help shape students into good human beings with the motivation to pursue excellence.
Hence, she said, the future of people depends on their teachers. - NST
