Anwar explains why Agong wants Parliament to convene before Aug 1

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said today that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has made it clear that Parliament should convene before the expiry of the emergency on Aug 1.

This was because the Agong specifically wanted MPs to debate the proclamation of emergency and the emergency ordinances.

"This means that Parliament must be reconvened on short notice," said Anwar (above) in a video address uploaded onto his Facebook page.

The Agong specifically cited Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution which stipulated that both the proclamation and the ordinances could be revoked if Parliament so chooses.

Therefore, said Anwar, Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should take steps to convene Parliament immediately.

Muhyiddin should resign if he refuses to heed the royal decree, he added.

Anwar said Muhyiddin's cabinet was "shameless" in that despite the Agong repeatedly stating that Parliament should be reconvened, the government had not done so.

"I am certain that the Agong is merely speaking up on behalf of the majority of MPs and the majority of the public.

"(The Agong) understands the suffering of the people and those who are not snobbish, (unlike) cabinet ministers and the attorney-general who give arrogant answers," he said.

Apart from debating the proclamation of emergency and the emergency ordinances, the Agong said parliamentary select committees should also function to ensure there was check and balance on the government especially on matters of finance.

Putrajaya aims to reopen Parliament only during Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan. It is yet uncertain when Phase 3 will come into effect.

Azhar and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim have said they aim to reconvene Parliament by the first week of September at the latest.  - Mkini
