Police are investigating a viral post alleging that Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali had been arrested in Perasing, Terengganu last month.
Bukit Aman CID chief Abd Jalil Hassan said the post on the website Info Negara Kini is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act.
In a statement today, he said police have taken statements from 11 people, but are still trying to determine who uploaded the post and will interview others before submitting their investigations to the Attorney-General's Chambers.
"We advise the public not to speculate or spread unfounded rumours without getting verified information from official sources regarding this case," Abd Jalil said.
Police confirmed last month that they had stopped Khairuddin at a roadblock in Perasing on May 16 and were investigating the minister.
News of the incident went viral on social media, with allegations that Khairuddin was travelling with an entrepreneur who is also the ex-wife of a prominent actor.
This prompted speculation about their relationship on social media.
Khairuddin later threatened to sue those who spread gossip about the incident.
He also said speculations about a relationship between him and the female celebrity were untrue. - Mkini
