Festival clusters worrying, warns Health DG

There were 60 Covid-19 clusters related to gatherings during festivals in the short span of four weeks starting May 13.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,511 cases detected among 13,023 people sampled, which translated to a very high positivity rate of 27 percent.

Among the 3,511 people who were positive, 20 have died and another 11 are in intensive care.

The regions with the highest number of such clusters are Sabah, Sarawak and Kedah.

"The increase in cases and deaths due to festival clusters is serious and worrying because it happened in a short time.

"If the people are still complacent and not take heed of the (the dangers) of visiting each other or crossing state borders during festivals, we might see another surge in new cases," he said.

He urged Malaysians to emulate those in neighbouring countries who are managing the pandemic by obeying the rules.

He urged Malaysians to stay at home unless absolutely necessary and ensure that their family members are vaccinated. - Mkini
