'Hybrid' Parliament: Revoke the emergency law first, PKR MP tells govt

The Perikatan Nasional government should stop beating around the bush and revoke the emergency law so that the Parliament can reconvene, said Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.

"I want to say that the elephant in the room in this issue which has stopped you (government) from reopening the Parliament is the existence of the Emergency Ordinance (Essential Powers) which the PN cabinet had enacted and made it a law under the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's decree.

"That is the real issue. If you want to reopen the Parliament, then what you should do is revoke this emergency law first.

"You geniuses are the stakeholders in the Parliament, so do not go around beating the bush and pretending not to see the real issue. If you do not understand, then go ask the attorney-general, who is the legal adviser to the government," said Hassan (above) in a statement.

The PKR MP was taking a swipe at Putrajaya over yesterday's statement by de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan, who announced that the government is considering holding a 'hybrid' parliament sitting.

Takiyuddin said the government has agreed “in principle” to the concept, which might see the Parliament holding a session where a number of MPs are present physically at the Dewan Rakyat while the rest participates virtually.

"The meeting also agreed that a further study will be done immediately, in order to prepare a paper so that this can be brought to the cabinet for consideration and approval as soon as possible," said the minister in the Prime Minister's Department in a statement yesterday.

On this, Hassan also lambasted the government for embarking on such a study five months after the Parliament was suspended.

"It has already been five months that parliamentarians were denied their rights to have a sitting, and now there is the need to make a further study?

"All this while, was there no such study conducted? How much more study do you want to do?" he asked. - Mkini
