Parliament must meet 6 months after last sitting, says Ku Li

Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said the prime minister cannot advise the King to defy the Constitution and Parliament must meet within six months, with the last day being today.

PETALING JAYA: Parliament must reconvene within six months of the last sitting, as stipulated in the Federal Constitution, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said.

Failing to do so, the Gua Musang MP said, would mean that the prime minister would have violated the Federal Constitution and his oath of office by not advising the King to convene Parliament.

“The prime minister cannot advise the King to defy Article 55 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a brief statement today.

The last Dewan Rakyat sitting was held on Dec 17 and the six months were up today.

Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, was weighing in on the debate over the phrase “as soon as possible” that Istana Negara used in calling for Parliament to be reconvened.

Article 55 stipulates that only the King can summon Parliament into session.

The King also has absolute power to prorogue or dissolve Parliament.

Yesterday, the King, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, said he wanted Parliament to reconvene as soon as possible.

Parliament and state assemblies were suspended after the King declared an Emergency in January to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Parliament would only open in the third phase of the national recovery plan, which is expected to be in September or October. - FMT
