Small number of serious AEFI cases reported so far - Adham

Health Minister Dr Adham Baba said the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has so far received 2.4 reports of AEFI (adverse events following immunisation) cases for every 1,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses administered.

Of these reports, only 0.09 out of every 1,000 doses administered were classified as serious AEFI cases requiring further treatment or hospitalisation, he added.

Meanwhile, data from MySejahtera’s AEFI monitoring system showed that, as of June 12, the app received 29.3 normal or minor AEFI reports for every 1,000 doses administered.

“The side effects reported are pain at the injection site, headaches, fatigue and so on, which are normal side effects after receiving a vaccine,” Adham said.

He was speaking at a joint weekly press conference with Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on the status of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP). The press conference was held in Putrajaya and was broadcast online.

For the record, the term "adverse event" in medicine refers to a medical occurrence that takes place after the use of a medicinal product, regardless of whether it is related to the medicine or not.

In contrast, the term "adverse reaction" is used to refer to unintended effects that are suspected to be caused by the medication.

Most patients AEFI cases who required further treatment or hospitalisation only spent a short time in the hospital and were discharged once sufficient monitoring has been completed, Adham said.

Adham said the government has also prepared a Covid-19 vaccine injury fund, which will compensate those who experienced adverse reactions to the vaccine.

Three committees will review the case to determine whether the AEFI is directly linked to the administered vaccine before compensation will be disbursed.

Khairy also announced that as of today, more than 4.4 million individuals have received at least the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. - Mkini
