Umno, PAS leaders push for factories closure as 'total lockdown' drags on

Umno and PAS leaders called on the government to temporarily shut down factories as the number of daily Covid-19 cases remain stubborn, forcing the total lockdown which began on June 1 to be extended.

Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii pointed out that the majority of Covid-19 clusters are related to the workplace.

"From the first day the government announced the lockdown, the people have lamented about the widespread factory operations which were already predicted to be a hurdle in reducing the number of cases," he said in a statement.

He added that the government ignored such concerns and now the lockdown was being extended indefinitely.

"The people are feeling the pressure as time passes. I again appeal to the government to listen to the plight of the people and to shut down the factories," Razlan (above) said.

Razlan said while the government is banking on the Covid-19 vaccination efforts to defeat the pandemic, herd immunity is only expected by December and the people cannot wait that long.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today announced that the total lockdown will be extended indefinitely as long as the average new daily cases do not fall below 4,000.

"The prime minister can give a 4,000 limit but what is the government doing to ensure that the numbers go down?" Razlan said.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth deputy chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari also appealed to the government to shut down factories.

"Put an end to workplace clusters. Extending the movement control order will burden the people and government.

"The returns from factory operations will only be forced to be returned to the people in the form of aid.

"Why not just stop factory operations which are the biggest contributor to Covid-19 clusters," he said in a Facebook post.

The total lockdown has impacted poor communities the most as they have limited savings and rely on daily income to support themselves. - Mkini
