PETALING JAYA: Umno wants an end to the Emergency on Aug 1 and not for the National Operations Council (NOC) to be set up, says party youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
He also noted that no major political party had asked for the NOC.
Asyraf said it was strange that the Prime Minister’s Office had come forward to oppose the proposal for the formation of the NOC to replace the government.
Besides calling for the end of the Emergency, Asyraf also listed Umno's other demands.
"The Emergency must end and not be continued after Aug 1, 2021 because it’s clear that for almost six months, it did not reduce Covid-19 cases to two-digits, ” he said in a Facebook posting on Thursday (June 10).
Other demands include for powers under the existing Emergency Ordinances to be used to help the public, including ordering banks to offer moratorium on loan repayments by borrowers without imposing additional charges or interest.
Umno also wanted the use of the Emergency powers to control the price of goods and to help the public with other financial assistance.
Asyraf also noted that although some of its lawmakers are temporarily in the Perikatan Nasional government, Umno as a party had never agreed and was not consulted at all regarding the proclamation of Emergency. - Star
