Tunku Abdul Rahman and Umno are to blame for losing Penang and Singapore. Hence Pulau Batu Puteh is not the only crime that needs investigating. So they need to be very careful about opening this Pandora’s Box. Pulau Batu Puteh is only the tip of the iceberg. And Pakatan Harapan is not squeaky clean either.
NO HOLDS BARRED
Raja Petra Kamarudin
Whether out of sheer mischief or imbecility, DAP’s P. Ramasamy decided to weigh in on the issue of Pulau Batu Puteh and echoed opinions of those currently slithering along the nation’s corridors of power.
No doubt, others had weighed in on the issue as well, but they were obviously doing so because of their political grudge stemming from their defeat to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the 2018 polls, apart from being caught with their hands in the cookie jar, for kleptocracy.
It seems that Pulau Batu Puteh, which Malaysia lost to Singapore in an International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision on 23 May, 2008, is a convenient issue to regurgitate since the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government decided not to proceed with an appeal on the decision when it took over the administration post the 2018 polls.
Since there’s not much for them to pin Dr Mahathir on during his 22-month rule, they decided to gang up and take the line that Dr Mahathir may have been negligent for not pursuing the appeal in 2018, whereas, in 2017, the previous Barisan Nasional administration had filed an “Application for Revision and Request for Interpretation” with the ICJ on its 2008 decision. When they are bankrupt of issues, then any issue is good enough, so long as you can make plenty of noise.
While we are at it, why not also set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate why Penang was not given back to Kedah when Malaya gained independence from Britain in 1957.
The Sultan of Kedah had signed an agreement with the British East India Company to hand over Penang to them. When the British left Penang in 1957, then the island should have been returned to Kedah.
The same with Singapore. Why was Singapore not handed back to Johor? Today, Penang and Singapore are no longer (Persekutuan) Tanah Melayu but belong to the Chinese.
After all, Hong Kong went back to China. To make matters worse, Penang, Singapore and Melaka came under the administration in India, not London, and only later were transferred to the British Colonial Office in London.
Hence the agreements were between the Sultans of Kedah and Johor and the East India Company, not between the two Sultans and London. And the East India Company was listed on the London Stock Exchange.
