High Court orders Home Ministry to register Muda in 14 days

Youth party Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) has won a court battle against the Home Ministry.

In a tweet, the party announced that the High Court had ordered the Home Ministry to register Muda as a political party within 14 days, and also awarded costs of RM10,000.

Muda filed a legal challenge against Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin for refusing the group’s appeal to register as a political party.

The party previously alleged that Hamzah withheld permission to register Muda because its chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman refused to support then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Speaking to the press outside court, Muda pro-tem vice-president Lim Wei Jiet said the court had ruled the Home Ministry's reasoning to reject Muda on grounds of national security was unfounded.

Grateful to judiciary

Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq expressed gratitude to the judiciary.

"Muda is truly grateful to the judiciary. Today's decision not only sides with us but with the country's democratic system," he said.

Today’s matter in court was the result of Muda's third legal action challenging the government's decision not to register it.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin

On Aug 12, Hamzah denied Muda’s appeal for registration.

The denial led the group to withdraw its second legal action which sought to compel the minister to decide on its appeal for registration after alleged delays in decision-making.

Its first legal challenge to get registered was rejected as the party had not gone through the Home Ministry's appeal process. - Mkini
