Telcos not charging govt for pandemic SMSes - minister

Putrajaya is not being charged by telecommunication service providers (telcos) for public reminders via SMS, which is managed by the National Security Council (NSC).

In a written parliamentary reply, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Abdul Latiff Ahmad said the text messaging service was given free on the basis of corporate social responsibility.

He said the telcos involved include Celcom, Digi, Maxis, UMobile, ALTEL, Webe, Tune Talk, Pavocomms, YTL, XOX, Redtone, Red One, and Merchantrade.

"For public service messages via SMS, all 13 telcos did not levy any charges for this SMS service on the basis of corporate social responsibility," he said.

Abdul Latiff (Bersatu-Mersing) said the government is committed to conveying pertinent information and reminding the public to prevent Covid-19 transmission as well as encourage SOP compliance.

As such, various channels were used including social media, TV, radio, and SMS to ensure the public receives sufficient information no matter where they are.

He added that the dissemination of public service messages is by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with the cooperation of the NSC, Prime Minister's Department, Health Ministry, and the 13 telcos.

"The government hopes such cooperation can be continued in the future, especially in conveying accurate information to the public," he said of the telcos.

Abdul Latiff was replying to a question by Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Iskandar Puteri).

Lim had urged the government to state the amount of payment made by the government for SMS services to remind the public of Covid-18 standard operating procedures. - Mkini
