Umno yet to decide if it wants to defend PN govt - Armand

Umno has yet to decide if it will defend the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in the next general election, according to its supreme council member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah.

When contacted, the Umno senator noted that the party is more interested in resolving issues related to people's welfare and economy.

"We always uphold the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agung to ensure that the agenda of the country and the people would be prioritised," he said.

"Umno has not made any decision to defend PN government in the 15th general election," he said.

"As an Umno leader, I will definitely follow the party's official decision when this matter is discussed in the future," he said.

The politics today is quite dynamic and progressive, noted Armand.

He, however, noted that the government of the day is the Malaysian Family government led by Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

This is despite Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi repeatedly claiming that Umno had decided, in its 2020 general assembly and supreme council, not to cooperate with Bersatu in the next election.

In November, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said that the Islamic party has positioned itself as a kingmaker in the next general election and would continue to be part of the PN coalition with Bersatu.

When asked if anyone in Umno is pushing for the party election to proceed in March 2022, nine months before the expiry of the current leadership's term, Armand did not provide a direct answer.

"We leave it to the top five Umno (leaders) to discuss issues related to party election," he said.

Zahid would maintain his position as Umno president until the end of next year after the party's supreme council decided in June to postpone party elections until after December 2022.

Umno leaders Nazri Abdul Aziz, Shahidan Kassim, and Khairy Jamaluddin were reportedly pushing for the election to proceed this year as initially scheduled.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the party election is expected to be held in November 2022. - Mkini
