Ex-Sabah minister ordered to enter defence in false document case

The Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur has ordered former Sabah infrastructure development minister Peter Anthony to enter his defence to charges of using false documents relating to a system maintenance contract seven years ago.

The decision was delivered by judge Azura Alwi today after she found the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against Peter.

The court fixed Jan 3 to 7 next year for the hearing.

Peter is Warisan vice-president and Melalap state assemblyperson. He was state minister when Warisan ruled Sabah between May 2018 and September 2020.

He was charged under Section 468 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine, and under Section 471 of the same Act, and is punishable under Section 465 of the same law, which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, if convicted.

Peter, 50, as the managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd, was charged with forging a letter from UMS deputy vice-chancellor's office dated June 9, 2014, by inserting a false statement in the title of the letter with the intention of using it to deceive the office of the principal private secretary to the prime minister between June 13, 2014, and Aug 21, 2014.

He was also slapped with an additional charge over the use of a false document as genuine, namely a letter from the office of the deputy vice-chancellor of UMS dated June 9, 2014, which had a false statement in the title of the letter.

In June last year, Peter was also charged on two separate occasions at the Kota Kinabalu Sessions court.

He was slapped with five charges of money laundering totalling RM8.75 million on June 11 and also with abetting criminal breach of trust amounting to RM15,545,400 involving a land deal between 2014 and 2015 on June 18. - Mkini
