Ex-Sarawak AG heads task force probing Thomas' allegations of judicial abuse

The government has appointed former Sarawak attorney-general Fong Joo Chung to chair a task force that is probing allegations of judicial abuse and interference made by former attorney-general Tommy Thomas in his autobiography.

Fong, who is also the current Sarawak state legal advisor, will be tasked with delivering the task force's findings and recommendations within six months of his appointment.

Other task force members include:

  • Former Sabah government chief secretary Hashim Paijan;
  • Former legal affairs division director Junaidah Kamarudin;
  • Former judge and senior federal lawyer Jagjit Singh Bant Singh;
  • Lawyer Shaharudin Ali;
  • Lawyer K Balaguru;
  • Representatives from the relevant ministries and agencies, including the Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC), MACC, police and Chief Government Security Office CGSO).

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced the task force into allegations by Thomas on Oct 21.

The proposed special task force will, among others, investigate Thomas' claims of abuse of power in the appointment of judges, excessive executive interference in the judiciary, selective and political prosecution and breach in the oath of secrecy.

Thomas laid out the allegations in his book "My Story: Justice in the Wilderness".

Previously Ismail had said that a former chief justice would head the task force.

Besides the task force in Thomas' allegations, that government had also set up two other task forces - one to look into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim and another one to review the Pulau Batu Puteh dispute. - Mkini
