Muafakat on the agenda for Umno division AGM

Umno's 191 divisions will deliberate on the Muafakat Nasional pact with PAS when the annual general meetings are held beginning Dec 18.

Party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said, for now, the party still has to fulfil the decision of the party's annual delegates assembly to uphold the pact.

"For now, there is still no decision by the party on Muafakat after PAS chose to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition over Muafakat during the Malacca elections.

"This is because Umno keeps its promises. We decided during the last annual delegates assembly that Muafakat has to be strengthened. Until the delegates assembly decides otherwise, the cooperation (with PAS) cannot be changed.

"Therefore, I hope the 191 divisions that will meet soon will vote wisely on Muafakat in view of the upcoming general election," he said in Pontian, Johor, according to Sinar Harian.

The divisional AGM will appoint delegates for the national annual delegates assembly - the party's highest decision-making body - on Jan 13 next year.

During the Malacca elections last month, Umno and PAS negotiations broke down. PAS chose to field candidates PN banner.

However, Umno could not work with PN because the coalition comprised of Bersatu, which the Umno delegates assembly explicitly opposes.

During the Malacca elections, Umno and PAS faced each other for seven seats. Umno won in all seven.

Following the elections, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said his party will continue to be part of PN while trying to unite Umno, PAS and Bersatu under the Muafakat pact.

Hadi said Muafakat was "incomplete" without Bersatu. - Mkini
