Hadi cautions Malay youths not to take Muda bait, says it's DAP's doing

JOHOR POLLS | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has claimed that Muda, a youth-led party, was a creation of DAP aimed at baiting Malay youths.

He likened Muda to Amanah, a PAS splinter party that Hadi claimed was also set up by DAP.

"DAP created Amanah. I know that they recruited PAS people to establish Amanah.

"Now it's the same with Muda. It is to bait Malay youths. Don't take the bait," Hadi (above) told some 2,000 supporters at the launch of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Kota Tinggi, Johor last night.

Pakatan Harapan has struck a deal to cooperate with the youth-based party in the upcoming Johor polls, with Amanah and DAP offering Muda to contest in six seats.

Abdul Hadi Awang (second from left) attends Perikatan Nasional’s launch of its Johor election machinery at Kota Tinggi, Johor on Feb 18, 2022.

In his speech, Hadi spoke about BN's corruption and its defeat by Harapan in the 2018 general election.

However, Hadi said PAS was unwilling to cooperate with the Harapan component parties as it could not accept, DAP, PKR and Amanah.

He repeated his assertion that DAP was "anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-monarchy".

He also called PKR a "liar" and then proceeded to apologise to Bersatu supreme council Azmin Ali, who was seen standing behind him at the event.

Azmin, who was formerly the PKR deputy president and had defected to Bersatu in 2020, laughed in response.

Top PN leaders from across the country had descended in Kota Tinggi last night for the party's official launch, including the unveiling of their new coalition song.

Gerakan ‘not extreme’

PN, Hadi said, was an acceptable coalition to PAS as Bersatu was no longer with Harapan while Gerakan is "not extreme".

He added that Harapan could not deliver on its promises after almost two years in power.

In contrast, PN did not have to make any promises.

"PN was created without any promises. When we were formed, there was no manifesto. We just did what we wanted to do," he said.

The PAS president also defended the PN government for disasters that had befallen the country, including the Covid-19 pandemic and floods.

"We were blamed for the pandemic. We were blamed for the major floods. The floods were an act of God. The pandemic is also an act of God. They are to test our wisdom.

'And Alhamdulillah, we were able to provide relief to the people. But on social media, the pandemic is being discussed as if it did not exist in other countries," he said.

He stressed that PN has been able to deliver during troubled times.

PN is part of a coalition government with BN in the federal government and several states.

However, BN, after ousting Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, is now gradually pushing PN out of their partnership.

BN forced snap polls in Johor and plans to win enough seats in order to form the state government on its own.

Johoreans will go to the polls on March 12. Nomination day is fixed for Feb 26. - Mkini
