PETALING JAYA: Indian authorities arrested two Malaysians at the Coimbatore international airport in Tamil Nadu on Friday for smuggling in 4.2kg gold.

Indian news daily The Hindu reported that the Malaysians, a man and a woman, were arrested after they arrived in Tamil Nadu from Singapore.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) checked the duo’s shoulder bags and found the gold bullion.

“Officers of the DRI intercepted the passengers at the Coimbatore International Airport on their arrival from Singapore on Scoot Airlines on Friday evening based on specific information,” the report said.

The authorities said the gold is worth 22.6 million Indian rupees (RM1.28 million).

“The passengers were then arrested on Saturday (April 30) after questioning.

Investigations are still ongoing.

With a 7.5% customs duty, the total levy on gold imports is pegged at 10.75% in India, making gold smuggling a lucrative prospect. Passengers entering India are also only allowed to bring in a limited amount of gold ornaments. - FMT
