PETALING JAYA: The commercial crime investigation department (CCID) will investigate allegations that a database containing personal information belonging to 22.5 million Malaysians is being sold through the dark web.
Bukit Aman CCID director Kamarudin Md Din confirmed a report had been lodged and investigations over the validity of the claim were underway.
“We urge the public not to speculate on the issue. The police can assure that proper investigations will be conducted to address the matter swiftly,” he said in a statement.
Earlier today, home minister Hamzah Zainudin denied the leak, stating that the dataset did not belong to the national registration department (JPN).
Yesterday, tech website Lowyat.net reported that a JPN dataset, which contains details of the entire population of the country with birth years from 1940 to 2004 – or roughly 22.5 million people – was on sale for nearly RM44,000 at a database marketplace forum.
The seller claimed the personal data included full names, identity card numbers, addresses and photographs. Data from the Election Commission (EC) website is also allegedly up for sale. - FMT
