Man dies in lock-up two weeks after jail sentence

A 48-year-old man died less than two weeks after he was sentenced to five months imprisonment for a drug offence.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Azri Ahmad (above) said the man who was supposed to serve his sentence at Kluang Prison was temporarily being housed at the Seri Alam District police headquarters lock-up until May 10.

He was convicted on April 27 under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for taking prohibited drugs.

"At 8.35am on May 8, on-duty personnel found the prisoner in a weak state and had contacted the hospital.

"A medical assistant from the Masai health clinic, Johor, arrived to conduct a check and confirmed the prisoner had died at 9.35am," Azri said in a statement.

He said Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department's criminal investigation and death in custody unit will probe the matter. - Mkini
