PETALING JAYA: Speculation about the purported resignation of the Melaka chief minister took a new twist when an Umno leader in the state revealed that there could be a plot to push Sulaiman Md Ali into quitting.
The acting chief of Alor Gajah Umno division, Rospandi Leman, said there was some form of coercion from certain quarters for Sulaiman to sign a resignation letter, as speculated on social media over the last few days.
A certain Umno leader was behind the move but Rospandi declined to name him. “Yes, there is. I am sure you also know (who the mastermind is),” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Earlier today, Melaka Umno deputy chief Ali Mohamad denied allegations that the chief minister had been forced to sign a resignation letter.
Hang Tuah Jaya Umno division chief Ridhwan Mohd Ali said Barisan Nasional had previously agreed to stick to the promise in the coalition’s state election manifesto to let Sulaiman continue as chief minister until the next general election.
“We are abiding by the promise made to the people of Melaka. I have no knowledge of anyone forcing Sulaiman to resign,” the report said.
Kota Melaka Umno division chief Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman declined to comment on the claims, while Jasin Umno division chief Hasan Abd Rahman said he would issue a statement soon.
Yesterday, Ali, who is also the Tangga Batu Umno division leader, said that the five Umno division leaders in Melaka had unanimously defended Sulaiman’s position and agreed to let him continue until the end of his term.
According to a Bernama report, Ali denied rumours that Sulaiman was forced to sign a resignation letter, saying the reports were defamatory and baseless. - FMT
