PKR polls: 8 divisions need redo due to miscommunication, glitches

Eight PKR divisions in four states have to redo their elections due to technical glitches and miscommunication issues, according to the party’s election committee (JPP).

Therefore, JPP chairperson Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the unofficial results of the polls, which were supposed to be revealed tomorrow (May 23), will only be known after the revoting process.

"Five divisions in Kelantan, including Ketereh, Bachok and Tumpat, as well as Dungun in Terengganu, have to redo their polls due to technical glitches," she told Malaysiakini when contacted.

She said the technical issue was due to the party's Adil application, which was used for the online voting process.

"We have both online and offline mode in the mobile app, in which the directive given to those on the ground is to apply online when the internet is okay. However, there was some misunderstanding and miscommunication," she explained.

She said the technical glitches happened in Kelantan and Terengganu on the first day of the election.

"In Kedah, we will hold a re-poll in Padang Serai as there were grouses between candidates," she added.

‘Not sabotage’

As for the Hulu Selangor division election, which was called off yesterday as no polling facilities and logistics were provided, Zaliha denied it was an act of sabotage as claimed by party grassroots.

While noting that the incumbent division committee needed to get the logistics ready before the polling, Zaliha, however, attributed the incident to yet another miscommunication.

"I haven't gotten any report on this yet, but it could be miscommunication. Our coordinators had coordinated with all the divisions in the past weeks to ensure things were done smoothly," she said.

"We were told that the hall (polling centre) was closed for preparation on Friday, so they (party staff) thought nothing was going to happen.

"But we heard the hall was still closed and nothing was done yesterday, so they tried to proceed with the polls. However, the party made the decision by 11am yesterday to call off the Hulu Selangor polls to prevent any further damage or chaos."

She said this was the best decision made by the party as more PKR members turned out at the polling centre.

"The re-poll date is undecided as three more states are holding their elections and we are expecting a possible protest at other divisions."

She said the JPP preferred to hold the revoting in one day if it involves fewer than 20 divisions.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a total of 93,085 eligible PKR members have voted in the 2022 election so far, including 76,932 who voted online from May 18 until Friday.

The PKR 2022 election, which saw a total of 11,282 candidates vying for various positions at the central, branch and wing levels, will conclude at the state level today with physical voting in Perak, Sabah and Sarawak. - Mkini
