PKR: Prolonged ceiling price causing chicken shortage

The prolonged imposition of a ceiling price for chicken has greatly contributed to shortages, said PKR.

In a statement today, PKR spokesperson for agriculture affairs Sim Tze Tzin said the ceiling price of RM8.90 per kg has been in place for 141 days - the longest in history.

"Such price controls will cause long term losses for farmers. As a result, farmers will reduce output to cut losses," said Sim, who is also the Bayan Baru MP and former deputy agriculture and agro-based industries minister.

He said two other factors for chicken shortages were a surge in demand due to the Aidilfitri celebrations and an increase in input cost.

He expected demand to reduce after the festive season.

In view of this, Sim urged the government to resolve supply problems with the farmers rather than resorting to importing chicken.

He said the government's plan to import chicken has been in place since December last year but it has not borne fruit because it was more expensive to do so for retailers.

Poultry producers have been complaining about price controls in recent months because they were forced to sell at unsustainable prices.
