Bar Council to hold EGM on judicial interference on May 27

At least 500 members of the Bar must be present for the EGM.

PETALING JAYA: The Bar Council’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to vote on motions related to claims of interference and intimidation of the judiciary will be held on May 27.

A circular posted on the council’s website stated that at least 500 members of the Bar must be present at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur for the EGM within an hour from 3pm, or else the meeting will be called off.

The other motion to be considered is the consequences of not using a tribunal to deliberate issues related to judges.

The Bar, which had last Friday decided to hold the EGM, also welcomed members to submit in writing by May 21 other motions to be considered at the meeting. The motions should be submitted to motions@malaysianbar.org.my.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission recently said it was probing Court of Appeal judge Nazlan Mohd Ghazali over claims that he had unexplained wealth. The judge convicted former prime minister Najib Razak in his RM42 million SRC International case.

Fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, who published an article about the investigation, also linked the money to Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, the businessman said to be the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal.

Nazlan has since lodged a police report over the allegations, saying they were “false, baseless and malicious” and aimed at undermining his credibility as a judge.

On May 4, six former Bar presidents signed a petition urging the current office bearers to hold a “walk for justice” in a bid to voice out against claims of “intimidation” of the judiciary.  - FMT
