Talk of anti-Sulaiman ‘plot’ just a smear, says Melaka Umno chief

PETALING JAYA: Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh has dismissed talk in political circles that he has been trying to pressure Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali into resigning.

These claims are nothing but baseless smears, he said today, according to Berita Harian.

“Whether directly or indirectly, I did not force Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali to sign a resignation letter. The claims made by certain quarters are nothing but baseless smears,” he was quoted as saying.

He said the talk of a plot against Sulaiman had been made to divide Melaka Umno as it prepares to face the coming general election.

Rauf, who is also Tanjung Bidara assemblyman, said that there was no reason for him and others in Melaka Umno to go after Sulaiman, as they had pledged to adhere to the Barisan Nasional’s manifesto for the Melaka state elections in November.

The manifesto had named Sulaiman as the coalition’s candidate for the chief minister’s post.

Rauf serves in Sulaiman’s government as the state executive councillor on industries, investment and entrepreneurship development.

He urged state Umno politicians to stop making claims about an anti-Sulaiman plot without presenting any solid proof. They should instead focus on developing Melaka.

Yesterday, the acting head of Alor Gajah Umno division, Rospandi Leman was reported as saying that Sulaiman had come under some form of coercion to sign a resignation letter, as speculated on social media over the last few days.

A certain Umno leader was behind the move but Rospandi declined to name him. “Yes, there is. I am sure you also know (who the mastermind is),” he was quoted as saying.
