Terengganu PAS makes overtures, but Umno is 'busy'

Terengganu PAS has made further overtures to its Umno counterparts but was met with a dead end.

According to Astro Awani, Terengganu PAS chief Husain Awang (above) said his party was twice unsuccessful in their attempts to organise meetings with Umno.

"We tried to hold meetings or create cooperation in our political activities. But our efforts have not succeeded.

"PAS has tried to create this relationship twice, but we failed. We have yet to succeed because Umno is busy," he told Astro Awani.

Currently, PAS has a two-thirds majority - 23 out of 33 seats - in the Terengganu legislative assembly, while Umno has 10 seats.

Umno, through the BN coalition, has won every state election in Terengganu except in 1999 and 2018.

In 2019, Umno and PAS signed the Muafakat Nasional charter as a step towards a formal electoral pact.

However, the following year saw PAS joining the Perikatan Nasional coalition, which Umno loathes.

Officially, PAS is still attempting to forge an alliance comprising both Umno and Bersatu.

However, Umno has enjoyed a resurgence since 2018, winning several by-elections and performing very well during the 2020 Sabah election.

Umno also won the 2021 Malacca election and 2022 Johor election handsomely, trouncing Bersatu and PAS. - Mkini
