Penang exco to hold special meeting on junior doctors' plight

Penang state executive councillor Norlela Ariffin will convene a Penang Health Committee meeting soon to investigate problems faced by junior doctors.

In a statement today, the Penanti assemblyperson said the meeting will be minuted and its resolutions submitted to the health minister.

"We want to address these issues formally and find real solutions for real change. Not band-aid solutions," she said.

Norlela said the meeting might hear from house officers and junior doctors first before inviting hospital authorities and health department officials.

"The Health Ministry has thousands of sincere and hard-working staff who save thousands of lives. I have received so many valuable insights on issues faced by house officers and junior doctors, along with suggestions on how to revamp the system.

"I wish the Health Ministry would change the culture of keeping everything under wraps. It is frustrating because it is hard to penetrate these walls to get the truth and solve real problems," she stressed.

Norlela has been very vocal about the treatment of junior doctors following the death of a 25-year-old doctor shortly after he was posted to the Penang general hospital.

The deceased was believed to have plunged to his death from the 23rd floor of his apartment building on April 17.

This is the second death involving junior doctors from the same hospital. In December 2020, a junior doctor resigned and died soon after. - Mkini
