Wan Fayhsal eyes Bagan Serai seat ahead of GE15

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has revealed his desire to run for the parliamentary seat of Bagan Serai in the 15th general election.

Speaking to reporters at a Hari Raya banquet in Simpat Ampat Semanggol yesterday, he said he has been making steady progress reaching out to voters over the past two years.

This included efforts to provide assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic and flooding crisis.

"Bagan Serai is my mother's village and in terms of my inclination and focus, Bagan Serai is on the list and if given the space to be a candidate here, I have no issues serving.

"As the Bersatu Youth chief, I have the right to contest anywhere in Malaysia. All parliamentary seats can be contested if the party permits it,” Wan Fayhsal (above) was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

However, he also explained that the distribution of seats and candidates was still under discussion within the Perikatan Nasional coalition - including PAS.

Recognises PAS’ strength

Umno candidate Noor Azmi Ghazali previously won the seat by a narrow 172 majority. He had beaten PAS’ Rohaya Bakar (17,048 votes) and Bersatu’s Adam Asmuni (12,987 votes).

Prior to this, said Wan Fayhsal, there were calls for PN to hand over the Bagan Serai seat to PAS.

“I recognise PAS’ strength in Bagan Serai because the party already had strong bloc votes every election.

"However, I think Bersatu also has its own advantages that can be utilised with PAS as a component partner by offering candidates among highly educated young people and understanding the cross-cultural atmosphere of the community here,” he added.

Wan Fayhsal was made a senator in the Dewan Negara in 2020. However, his term is set to end on March 8, 2023. - Mkini
