National Recovery Council (NRC) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said the performance of his council should be judged by the public, not politicians.
Speaking to reporters in Tanah Merah, Kelantan today, Muhyiddin said assessments by politicians tend to have an agenda.
"I leave it to the public to evaluate us. Sometimes politicians make statements for political purposes. I don't want to reply. It is up to the rakyat.
"I am in the council to help the country and the government. Our recommendations are based on existing government policies.
"As an example, we recommended the reopening of borders in January. However, the government delayed it until April.
"That recommendation came from us. We wanted to expedite (the reopening) because as long as borders remain closed, our economy cannot grow," he said.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had called for the NRC to be disbanded following the formation of a new task force to address inflation, which is headed by Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa.
Zahid argued that NRC required the participation of ministry officials and thus would be a waste of their time.
Muhyiddin said he served the NRC for free and would resign if that was what the public wanted.
"If the rakyat say 'Muhyiddin enough', I will stop. I do this pro bono. I don't ask for a salary. I do this with sincerity," he said. - Mkini
