Bersatu does not need the deputy prime minister’s position because it already has two “senior” cabinet ministers, said Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.
Ahmad said in contrast, Umno and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) only had one “senior” cabinet position each.
“Bersatu already has two senior ministers. I believe it is inappropriate for them to ask for the deputy prime minister’s position.
“Moreover, the Umno supreme council was never briefed about (a vacancy for) deputy prime minister,” said Ahmad, according to Astro Awani.
Currently, Bersatu is lobbying for one of its members to be made deputy prime minister, ostensibly because they had an agreement with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Bersatu ally PAS has denied the existence of such an agreement and disagreed that such a position was necessary.
However, Bersatu information Wan Saiful Wan Jan insisted that the agreement existed and that Umno’s Annuar Musa was a witness.
Ahmad said since the Umno supreme council was unaware of the existence of such an agreement, it is assumed that the agreement does not exist. - Mkini
