PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Puad Zarkashi says Wan Saiful Wan Jan has “all but confirmed” the party was chasing after the deputy prime minister’s post in backing Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the prime minister.
This comes after Wan Saiful, the Bersatu information chief, told FMT the party’s demand for the deputy prime minister’s post was part of the agreement for Perikatan Nasional (PN) to support Ismail as the prime minister before his appointment last August.
Puad said this proved that Bersatu was only prioritising government posts and not the people since it started backing Ismail for the top post.
The Umno Supreme Council member said his party was “better” and “more gentlemanly” than Bersatu as it did not have any written agreements in backing Ismail as the prime minister.
“Umno supported Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister (in March 2020) for the sake of the people, though he collaborated with DAP to topple Barisan Nasional in GE14,” he said in a Facebook post.
Puad urged Ismail to ignore the agreement with PN over the deputy’s post, saying it would not benefit Malaysians.
Yesterday, Wan Saiful said the agreement between PN and Ismail was accepted by both parties, maintaining it was not a new request but something that had yet to be fulfilled.
On Saturday, Muhyiddin said a recent meeting with Ismail was to discuss political appointments, including the deputy prime minister’s post, as was previously agreed when Bersatu decided to support Ismail’s government. - FMT
