Cuepacs: Seputeh MP never did anything on 'ethnic imbalance' while in govt

The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) has criticised Seputeh MP Teresa Kok for allegedly politicising the ethnic imbalance in civil service.

In a statement today, Cuepacs president Adnan Mat (above) shot back at Kok by accusing her of not improving the civil service while she was part of the federal government.

"Instead, a lot of civil servants were pressured and threatened. Others had their service contracts terminated.

"Some of Kok's colleagues urged the government to reduce the number of civil servants and described us as a burden on the government," said Adnan in a statement today.

Yesterday, Kok had urged the federal government to push for a more racially balanced civil service to better reflect the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia, a slogan introduced by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

This was in view of the government's admission that the bumiputera made up nearly 90 percent of the civil service - excluding the police and military.

This was disproportionately higher than the 69.6 percent estimate of the bumiputera population reported by the Population and Housing Census 2020.

Kok, who was a cabinet minister during the 22-month Pakatan Harapan administration, claimed that the number of non-bumiputera applying to join civil service was low because of the salary.

She added that there was also a widespread perception of unequal chances in recruitment and career advancement, leading to less interest in the civil service among potential non-bumiputera recruits.

Adnan said Kok's claim of racial bias was unfounded but agreed that civil service pay was a disincentive for non-bumiputera applicants.

"Most who join the civil service - especially in the security and defence sector - do so out of patriotism and love for the country.

"That is why civil servants are always neutral and apolitical. The civil service does not discriminate and we are always at the frontlines in every emergency," he said.  - Mkini
