The transport ministry should immediately instruct all driving schools to include lessons on reversing at toll gates as a key part of the driving syllabus.
It is no secret that drivers are struggling every day to perform the tricks which our highway authority and concessionaires expect from them.
The placement of traffic cones between toll booth lanes makes the task of reversing much more complicated.
Although Malaysian drivers have become quite adept and have taken to this unique motorsport most admirably, new drivers will stand to benefit immensely from a structured course.
Special modules can also be devised for senior citizens and owners of unroadworthy vehicles.
The measure is necessary for obvious reasons.
It is abundantly clear to right-thinking road users that toll gates do not function properly.
Malaysians know that they cannot expect to benefit from the best technological solutions.
They also know that they cannot expect concessionaire staff to be too bothered to be available and to attend promptly when a road user gets stuck at our toll gates.
What drivers can and must be expected to do is carry out some daredevil reversing. They must be given help to develop this skill.
The sports ministry should consider proposing toll gate reversing as a SEA Games sport when Malaysia next hosts the event in 2027.
We already have the talent to produce a rare clean sweep of medals. - FMT
