Kalwant's bid for stay to be heard by Singapore court on eve of execution

A Malaysian inmate on death row in Singapore has filed a notice of motion to the Singapore Court of Appeal for a stay of execution, according to Lawyers for Liberty (LFL).

The NGO said Kalwant Singh’s stay application would be heard today, July 6, which is the eve of his execution.

“Kalwant’s stay application will be heard by a bench of three judges at the Court of Appeal on July 6 at 3pm, being the day before his scheduled execution,” LFL said in a statement yesterday.

Kalwant (above) has also filed for a review of his conviction and sentence, it added.

Kalwant was arrested for possessing 60.15g of diamorphine and trafficking 120.9g of diamorphine in 2013 and convicted in 2016 under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The human rights group said that Kalwant’s family, from Cameron Highlands, was only informed on June 30 of his execution scheduled on July 7.

LFL, along with several other groups, had previously called on the Singaporean government to halt his execution.

Its director, Zaid Malek, had said Kalwant is merely next on a long list of Malaysians who are to be executed under the death penalty in Singapore.

“(This is) despite a barrage of criticisms it (Singapore) has received from the international community for its ruthless executions of low-level drug mules,” he added.

Rights group Sebaran Kasih has also advocated for Kalwant, saying that he was only 23 years old when he was arrested.

He has since spent more than nine years on death row, with Sebaran Kasih saying that Kalwant had been subjected to solitary confinement in a tiny cell for excruciatingly long hours.

This came just two months after the execution of Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, an intellectually disabled man who was executed on April 27 on drug trafficking charges. - Mkini
