Lawyer: AGC still mulling ex-diplomat, son's representation over drug case

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) is still considering the letter of representation in the drug case against a former diplomat and his son.

Lawyer Rahmat Hazlan said this was informed to the Bentong Magistrate’s Court and the Raub Sessions Court today during the mention of the various charges against Zainal Abidin Alias and Mohamed Rizal.

“The representation letter is still under consideration, no outcome yet.

“The chemist report is still not ready,” the counsel told Malaysiakini this afternoon, adding that both lower courts then fixed Sept 22 for further mention of the cases.

A letter of representation is where a party proposes a way to resolve a legal matter, such as via no charges being levied or for a lesser charge being put forward.

On June 2, it was reported that the father-son sent the representation letter to the AGC.

Before the Bentong Magistrate’s Court, Zainal Abidin and Rizal were charged with trafficking in cannabis oil, which carried the death sentence on conviction per Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Before the Raub Sessions Court, the father and son faced charges of planting 102 cannabis plants, which is punishable with life imprisonment and whipping of not less than six strokes, per Section 6B of the Act.

The former diplomat was detained during a police raid on his house on May 21.

The police arrested his son in Shah Alam, Selangor, two days later. - Mkini
