MCMC has probed 692 cases under CMA from 2020 to date - minister

PARLIAMENT | The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened a total of 692 investigation papers for various offences under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, as well as its subsidiary laws, from 2020 up to June this year.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa in a written reply to Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) said 87 cases were prosecuted in court, while 367 offenders were fined.

"To date, there are 203 MCMC officers at its headquarters (in Putrajaya) and state offices tasked with enforcement and regulation of the communications and multimedia industry," he added.

Their roles cover various technical, economic, consumers and social aspects, as well as compliance with the CMA Act and related provisions under its subsidiary law.

Annuar's response did not elaborate on the nature of offences probed, the outcome of the prosecutions or status of the remaining cases.

However, the government has been accused of abusing Section 233 of the CMA on improper use of network facilities to stifle freedom of expression online, with multiple charges brought against, among others, graphic artist Fahmi Reza and cartoonist Zunar.

The section provides for one-year jail time and a maximum RM50,000 fine.

In recent weeks, new CMA charges were also brought against individuals under probe and separately charged for allegedly insulting Islam through their content posted online including for recordings of stand-up comedy performances. - Mkini
