Mother charged again for stealing Milo after High Court orders retrial

A mother of four who was sentenced to 14 months in jail for stealing two packets of Milo worth RM74 early this month, was charged again for the same offence in the Marang Magistrate's Court yesterday after a High Court ordered a retrial.

Suhaini Mohd pleaded not guilty and was allowed bail at RM3,000.

Magistrate Engku Nurul Ain Engku Muda set Sept 6 for mention.

Kuala Terengganu High Court judge Hassan Abdul Ghani yesterday ordered a retrial and set aside her conviction and sentence.

The High Court also ruled that the case be heard at the same Magistrate's Court.

When met outside the courtroom yesterday, defence counsel Naran Sigh said the defence found defects in the proceedings as the prosecution tendered exhibits of previous offences in court.

"Firstly, it is wrong to submit a past offence before the court, which the prosecution did," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

On July 5, the 43-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing Milo packets at a supermarket on May 25 after the initial charge was read to her.

Based on the fact sheet, the supermarket operator suspected her of stealing after watching CCTV. She was nabbed by the police on June 6.

It was reported that she has three criminal records for stealing between 2019 and 2021.

Separately, she was also sentenced to 18 months in prison for two counts of drug abuse charges.

In the latest case, she was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine.

On July 6, Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad called on the Attorney-General’s Chambers to show mercy in the woman’s case. - Mkini
